Who founded Carhartt WIP
The brand's newsroom says Carhartt WIP was established in 1994 by Edwin Faeh, and HBX gives the same year and founder. Sleek says it was established in 1994 by Edwin and Salomée Faeh as a subdivision of the American workwear brand.
Wikipedia describes Edwin and Salomee Faeh as Swiss designers who specialised in denim and who, during a 1989 US visit, discussed representing Carhartt in Europe. The brand's history timeline says that in 1989, under the title All American Concept, Faeh started to introduce distinctly American products, such as Carhartt, to the European market. Gear Patrol describes Faeh as a Swiss designer through whom Carhartt arrived in Europe, and says Carhartt became an instant success at his All American Concept store.
How Carhartt WIP relates to Carhartt
HBX says Carhartt was founded by Hamilton Carhartt in Detroit in 1889. The brand's timeline says that in 1994 Work in Progress was established by Edwin Faeh to become the exclusive distributor of Carhartt in Europe, and that in 1996 Work in Progress acquired the licence to manufacture Carhartt products outside of the USA. Gear Patrol gives the same two steps: exclusive rights to sell Carhartt in Europe in 1994 under a new label, and rights to produce Carhartt products outside the US two years later. Wikipedia instead says that in 1994 the Faehs were granted a licence to create their own lines of clothing under the name Carhartt Work in Progress.
Gear Patrol calls Carhartt WIP the official European offshoot of the U.S.-born company and reports that Carhartt offered the WIP licence to update the company's pillar products; it adds that the brand has since come full circle by expanding to the US. In a 2015 Hypebeast interview Faeh said: "The active worker wears original Carhartt workwear from USA".
Wikipedia says Carhartt WIP is the streetwear version of Carhartt and is often marketed as comparable to Stüssy or Supreme.
Who owns Carhartt WIP
The brand's own pages we opened do not say who owns Carhartt WIP. END. states that Carhartt and Carhartt WIP are "both owned by the descendants of founder Hamilton Carhartt". Wikipedia says only that the parent Carhartt company is a privately held, family-owned company owned by the descendants of Hamilton Carhartt. We could not confirm END.'s statement from another source.
The look
The brand's US about page describes Carhartt's utilitarian aesthetic and links it to the brand's adoption by rappers, graffiti writers and corner boys. It says people may link the yellow "C" motif with late-1990s hip hop videos or skate clips. In the Hypebeast interview Faeh says the brand has had its skate team since 1996.
Collaborations
The brand's history timeline dates its capsule collections to 2010. Its US about page lists collaboration partners including A.P.C., Converse, Fragment Design, Junya Watanabe, Nike, Patta and Vans.
Where to buy Carhartt WIP and what it costs
The newsroom says Carhartt WIP operates over 100 brick and mortar retail stores across Europe, Asia and the US and works with select wholesale clients. The brand's history timeline dates the first WIP store to 1997, on Neal Street in London. The brand's US site shows a product grid with prices in US dollars and links to Stores and Stockists.
