Who founded Gallery Dept.
Fashion Beans describes Josué Thomas as a multidisciplinary artist who initially had no intention of building a fashion label, and says his early work reworked vintage garments to order using paint, distressing and reconstruction. Farfetch says he once worked at Ralph Lauren.
Farfetch says the label was officially founded in 2017 and that Thomas sold his first piece a year earlier, a hand-sewn denim poncho that, it says, he famously sold to Johnny Depp's stylist. StockX instead describes Gallery Dept. as founded in 2016 by the Los Angeles-based artist and designer, so sources differ on the year.
What Gallery Dept. makes and how it looks
Fashion Beans names reworked vintage denim, paint-splattered washes, raw hems and visible wear, hand-screened logos and the recurring Art That Kills slogan as the label's codes. Farfetch says each piece is fashioned using vintage apparel, and lists paint splatters, brushstrokes, tie-dye, patches and slogans including Art That Kills. StockX calls it an avant-garde mix of distressed, deconstructed and reconstructed apparel with a nod to vintage Americana.
Fashion Beans says denim remains the backbone, supported by hoodies, crewnecks, T-shirts, sweatpants, hats and utilitarian accessories. The brand's own shop page listed tees, hoodies, track and outerwear jackets, shorts, caps, socks and a towel, with LA Flare jeans (dark denim) among its bottoms; no jewelry appeared, when we checked in October 2026. Fashion Beans, in an article dated 21 January 2026, says most production stays in Los Angeles.
Collaborations and Chrome Hearts
Farfetch lists a Lanvin x Gallery Dept. Logo Patch Biker Jacket, which it says injects some fun into Lanvin's black biker jacket silhouette. The retailer Feature says in a history of the label that Gallery Dept. was designing with Chrome Hearts; the page gives no dates or products for this. We found no editorial source that compares the two brands.
Closure, reopening and Art That Kills
Highsnobiety reported that Thomas announced the end of Gallery Dept. in a letter posted on Instagram, writing that he would withdraw from the fashion industry, while the web store and international stockists still had existing stock available; the article gives no explicit date for the announcement, but mentions a store-closing collage in August and an Everything Must Go video on 11 September. A second Highsnobiety article says the label suddenly shuttered and then almost instantly reopened, with little explanation for either move, and that Thomas oversees the internationally distributed Gallery Dept..
The same article reports that an Art That Kills website quietly launched on 11 September 2023, and quotes a PR representative saying Art That Kills had officially launched publicly as its own entity. In an earlier interview quoted by Highsnobiety, Thomas said he would rather people engage with the clothing first than look at the price.
Where to buy Gallery Dept. and what it costs
The brand sells through its official site, whose region selector offered United States (USD) as an option when we checked in October 2026. Highsnobiety said the web store and international stockists still had stock available.
On the official site the French Logo Lux tee was $250, the Dépt. De La Galerie hoodie in black $650 (the ERDL Camo version $675), the Dépt. Coach Jacket $795 (marked sold out), LA Flare dark-denim bottoms $995, the Mechanic Jacket in navy $1,095 and the Santa Fe Trucker Jacket in washed indigo $1,295. The site shows no date for these prices, so treat them as listings checked in October 2026.
