Who is behind Saint Michael
Hypebeast presents Yuta Hosokawa and Cali Thornhill DeWitt as the two people behind the brand, though it never says who founded it. It says Hosokawa launched READYMADE in 2013 and describes DeWitt as a Los Angeles-based artist who plays many roles. Hosokawa said Saint Michael is totally different from READYMADE and is a new brand. Highsnobiety refers to DeWitt's work with Kanye West.
Hosokawa lives in Osaka and DeWitt in Los Angeles, and Hosokawa said the team is only three or four people. We found no source that states who owns the company, or where it is headquartered.
When it launched
HBX's Japanese brand page says Saint Michael was established in January 2020. Highsnobiety says it was unveiled in Paris in January, without naming the year in the text.
The look and how it is made
Hosokawa described the brand as vintage-like and referenced clothing from the 1940s and 1950s. He said everything is painted by hand and that some lettering is hand-drawn without a computer. On production he said it is all made in Japan, fabric included, and that the team experiments with different factories to get close to natural staining.
Highsnobiety says the distressed finish dovetails with DeWitt's religious iconography and off-the-wall punk scrawls, and names 30-thread cotton hoodies finished in a large drum tumbler and a Schott perfecto jacket. Diverse describes T-shirts, long-sleeve T-shirts, hoodies and shirts, with graphic prints placed on fabrics processed to a level comparable to real vintage items, using special sewing machines and dyes.
Chrome Hearts
Hosokawa said he loves Chrome Hearts and that its business has not changed over the years, in the same breath as Levi's. The interview describes no collaboration or other link between the two brands.
