Who founded WTAPS
Heddels says WTAPS was founded in 1996 by Tetsu Nishiyama, a.k.a. TET. The brand's own site says "WTAPS started in 1996" and that it launched four years after its founder and director, Nishiyama, launched a predecessor label, FORTY PERCENT AGAINST RIGHTS. Hypebeast's HB100 profile lists him as "Founder of WTAPS".
Sources differ on the year. Highsnobiety says WTAPS first properly launched in 1997, and END.'s brand page also says Nishiyama founded it in 1997. We use 1996, the year the brand itself gives. We did not find a source that says who owns WTAPS.
The look
Highsnobiety describes the label as military-influenced and refers to the utilitarian nature of its clothes, with nyco and ripstop fabrics and lots of pockets; it says the collections draw on prep, military, punk and skate. END. says Nishiyama built the label on "disciplined, military-coded design", translating field uniforms and outdoor gear into menswear. Heddels reports that early collections leaned on olive drab, camouflage and ripstop, and that later work added traditional workwear, Ivy League style and 1980s and 1990s sportswear.
Highsnobiety names GPS coordinates, a sickle logo and the tagline "visualuparmored" among the brand's signatures. Heddels lists a crossbones motif, patches reading "WTAPS", "ROGUE SQUAD" and "MOUT", and NATO phonetic alphabet sizing, such as "Lima" for Large. The brand's site says its slogan was "BEHIND THE BALACLAVA", working "without publicizing a face or the origin behind it".
Where WTAPS sits in Tokyo streetwear
The brand's site says WTAPS is still releasing from Tokyo and came out of Ura Harajuku, which it calls a counter culture that started as an independent aggregation. END. places it in the Ura-Harajuku movement, arriving just after peers such as NEIGHBORHOOD, BAPE and UNDERCOVER. The Japanese magazine Oceans wrote in March 2025 that WTAPS is one of the brands earning the most props in today's street scene (our translation).
What WTAPS makes
Highsnobiety names Jungle Stock shirts, trousers and shorts, design T-shirts and M-65s. Heddels lists backpacks, boonie hats, cargos, field jackets, M-65s, BUDS shirts, a wool varsity and hoodies. END. lists T-shirts, shirts, jackets, trousers, knitwear, shorts, caps and sneakers.
Collaborations
Highsnobiety lists collaborations with UNDERCOVER and BAPE early on, Vans Syndicate "Bones" sneakers, a 2013 Vans Vault release, Supreme, Carhartt WIP and NEIGHBORHOOD. Heddels adds Porter Yoshida and says the first WTAPS x Vans collection came in 2006. Hypebeast's 2019 HB100 profile names collaborations with fragment design, Herschel Supply Co., Oakley and Human Made, and its headlines record the Vault by Vans partnership reignited on 2 November 2022 and a UNDERCOVER x WTAPS release on the Converse Addict Chuck Taylor High on 26 September 2022.
Where to buy WTAPS and what it costs
Highsnobiety says WTAPS opened its first and only flagship, GIP-Store, in 2011 and that until very recently the brand only sold out of its showroom. Heddels describes the GIP Store in Shibuya as the official flagship and names HAVEN and END. as third-party retailers. We did not confirm whether wtaps.com sells online. END. and Overkill list the brand.
