CMF Comfy Outdoor Garment
Description
Originally established in 1915 in Seattle as a bedding and down quilt manufacturer, Comfy Outdoor Garment (now widely known as CMF) was revived in 2009 by the Harajuku-based vintage store Lost Hills. Under the direction of Makoto Okuya, the brand reimagines vintage American mountaineering aesthetics with modern technical fabrics (like eVent and dyneema) and avant-garde, modular silhouettes. While the name pays homage to its American roots, CMF is operationally a Japanese label central to the modern gorpcore movement.

Who owns CMF
This Thing Of Ours, a UK retailer, wrote on 30 October 2020 that Makoto is the "designer and owner" of the brand. The post gives no surname. We did not find an opened source that names a founder or says when the label began, so this page does not give a founding year.
Where CMF is from, and the directory conflict
Highsnobiety calls CMF a Japanese label based out of Harajuku, a district in Shibuya, Tokyo. The Lost Hills site, which lists CMF Outdoor Garment among the brands it carries, gives its own address as Kitaueno 2-17-9, Taito-ku, Tokyo, so the sources differ on the district.
A personal Substack post about a CMF Outdoor Garment inner liner says a family business operated out of Seattle from 1915 as Seattle Quilt Manufacturing Company, a history it traces to the Milwitzky family. It does not explicitly say that company became the Japanese label, so we treat the link as unconfirmed, and no source we opened gives a founding year for the Japanese label.
What CMF makes
Highsnobiety says CMF has a reputation for outdoor-focused apparel and accessories, with forward-thinking designs and innovative materials. It lists Spring/Summer 2023 pieces as waterproof overshirts with detachable pockets, mesh headwear, cropped hooded gilets and knee-length anoraks. This Thing Of Ours calls the Scale PO Shell Jacket heavily military influenced and the Interval Jacket classically styled, credits the brand with real innovation at its heart, and describes the Slash Shell Jacket as featuring an asymmetric zip design.
HBX's brand page, in Traditional Chinese, describes high-performance technical clothing and accessories that are packable and multifunctional.
Where to buy CMF and what it costs
Highsnobiety describes CMF as part of the Lost Hills store collective. The Lost Hills webshop, losthills-store.jp, lists CMF products, and This Thing Of Ours lists the brand too. HBX has a brand page that describes the range but shows no product prices.
This Thing Of Ours listed the Lightweight Slow Dry Pocket Tee in black at £65, the Hybrid Dry Dot Tee at £105, W Tuck Pants at £145, the Backpackerz 32 Smooth Nylon Backpack at £255 and the Neck Guard Octa at £20. The Lost Hills webshop listed the CMF-Octa Hoodie at ¥16,000 (¥17,600 in parentheses), the CMF Woven Down Vest at ¥38,000 (¥41,800) and the CMF-Octa LS Tee Mod at ¥12,000 (¥13,200); the text we could read was partly garbled, and the parenthetical figures appear to be tax-inclusive prices. None of these listings carried a date and the pages do not say whether they are full or reduced prices, so they are prices checked in October 2026. The pound and yen prices are not a like-for-like comparison.
